BREWSTER, Mass-
The Brewster Whitecaps exploded for an eight run second inning, as the Whitecaps defeated the Hyannis Harbor Hawks 13-10 on Wednesday night at Stony Brook Field. Brewster improves to 9-8 with the victory. The game proved to be an offensive battle as the two teams combined to score 23 runs. The Whitecaps got on the board early in the contest, opening the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Logan Warmoth crushed a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Caps a 2-0 lead. Hyannis quickly struck back in the top of the second as Cody Henry worked a leadoff walk and Brett Netzer brought him around to score with an RBI triple. Trey Truitt added another two runs with a two-run double to give the Harbor Hawks a 3-2 lead. Brewster’s most productive inning came in the bottom half of the second as they tallied eight runs on eight hits and jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Bryce Jordan, Kekai Rios and Julian Infante tallied three straight singles to open the frame, and Beau Jordan equalized the game at 3-3 with an RBI single to left field. Nick Dunn then tapped an RBI single through the left side, scoring two runs and giving the Caps a 5-3 lead. Warmoth added another RBI single to make it 6-3, and Brent Rooker blasted a two-run double, extending the lead to 8-3. Ryan Noda finished off the inning blasting an opposite field home run to make it 10-3. Hyannis would add two more runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Caps lead to 10-5. The Harbor Hawks battled back in the fifth inning as Chris Hudgins slammed a three-run homer over the left field wall to cut the Caps lead to 10-8. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Brewster added a pair of runs on a Beau Jordan RBI single. Cody Henry tallied an RBI triple for the Hawks in the ninth to cut the lead to 13-10, yet they were unable to equalize as the Caps held on for the victory. Dunn, Warmoth and Beau Jordan each went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored in the offensive battle. The Whitecaps return to action when they travel to Orleans on Friday, to face the Firebirds at 7 p.m. The Brewster Whitecaps came into Tuesday night rested and looking to end a two game losing streak. Unfortunately, they faced the best pitching team in the league, did not have a great pitching performance, and did not have their best offensive performance. That combination led to the Whitecaps' third consecutive loss, this one coming to the Harwich Mariners.
Walter Borkovich (Michigan State) had the start and was looking to give Brewster a good performance in his first start of the summer. Instead, he faced five batters, recorded no outs, walked his first two batters, allowed three hits and three earned runs. Tyler Zuber (Arkansas St.) came on in relief and performed admirably. He stayed on for six innings, struck out six batters, gave up only 2 runs, and gave his team a chance to win the game. Despite Zuber's performance, Brewster's high octane offense never got in gear. Harwich starter BJ Myers (West Virginia) controlled the game for seven innings. He only allowed 5 hits and struck out 6 batters. Harwich kept the hottest offense in the league from scoring all the way until the ninth inning when Ryan Noda (Cincinnati) hit his fourth home run of the season to keep Brewster from getting shut out for the second time in the season. Brewster falls to 8-8 on the season, which puts them tied with Chatham and Orleans. Harwich extends their record to 12-4, which enlarges their lead in the division to 8 points over the three second place teams. The Whitecaps will get a chance to end their three game losing streak tomorrow with the second meeting of the season against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. First pitch will be at 5 pm at Stony Brook Field. Ryan Feltner (Ohio State) and Mac Sceroler (Southeastern Louisiana St.) are the expected starters for Brewster and Hyannis respectively. Harwich went with a five-man infield, yet Beau Jordan then brought home the game-winning run with a single to left field to plate the winning run as the Whitecaps walked-off with the 3-2 victory. Tyler Zuber tossed two scoreless innings in relief and picked up the win for the Whitecaps. The Caps return to action tomorrow night, as they travel to Chatham to face the Anglers at 7 p.m. Brewster came into Thursday night looking for a win to keep their record above .500. The Hyannis Harbor Hawks were looking to extend their winning streak to four wins in a row. Unfortunately for Hyannis, they ran into one of the toughest lineups in the league. Not only did the Whitecaps get their record to 7-5 and ended Hyannis' winning streak, they did it in convincing fashion.
Hyannis did get the first run of the game. Ford Proctor (Rice) singled in the first and came around to score on Jordan Rodgers' (Tennessee) single. After surrendering the 1-0 lead, Brewster starter Hunter Martin (Tennessee) controlled the game. He didn't allow another run until the 6th inning, only allowed 5 hits, and struck out 8 batters, a career high in the Cape League and the most by a starting pitcher in the League this season. His offense gave him all the help he could dream of. The avalanche of runs began in the 3rd inning when Brewster loaded the bases with 2 outs and AJ Graffinino (Washington) laced a double into right center to put the Whitecaps ahead 3-1. Brewster extended their lead in the 5th with Ryan Noda (Cincinnati) driving in Nick Dunn (Maryland) on a short single to right field. Hyannis did get a run in the top of the sixth when Proctor scored on a groundout by Rodgers. That cut the lead to 4-2. Brewster then turned on the afterburners to put Hyannis away. The Whitecaps sent 10 batters up to the plate in the 7th inning and scored 6 runs. The highlight plays were singles by Brent Rooker (Mississippi State) and Bryce Jordan (LSU) that drove in two runs each. Ryan Noda hit an exclamation point homerun to end the Whitecaps scoring in the 8th. Hyannis got one last run in garbage time, but the game had long since been decided. Hyannis falls to 4-8 and watched their losing streak end in painful fashion. Brewster pushed their record to 7-5 and won the first meeting between these teams this summer. Brewster will end their two game home stand with a 5pm game against the Harwich Mariners, who will make their first visit to Stony Brook this summer. ORLEANS, Mass- The Whitecaps offense came up short, and starter Ryan Feltner allowed six earned runs over four innings as the Brewster Whitecaps fell to the Orleans Firebirds 7-3 on Wednesday night. The Caps fall to 6-5 with the loss.
The Whitecaps’ starter tossed four complete innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out one. The Caps struck first in the contest as Brent Rooker delivered an RBI single in the top of the first to put Brewster up 1-0. The Firebirds would strike back in the bottom half of the frame and add two runs on a Riley Adams RBI single to make it 2-1. Adam Haseley would extend the Orleans advantage in the bottom of the third with a homer to deep left field. Keegan McGovern then ripped a three-run homer to extend the Firebirds lead to 5-1. In the top of the fifth, Nicholas Dunn laced a ball deep to left center field to cut the Orleans lead to four. The Firebirds would strike again in the sixth as Golsan blasted a pitch from Bryan King deep down the left field line, putting the Birds up by five once again to make it 7-2.
