After a disappointing tie on Sunday and an off day on Monday, the Brewster Whitecaps looked to extend their points streak in an attempt to increase their standing in the Eastern Division. Instead, they ran into a frustratingly similar game story and fell to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.
Brewster's starter, Zac Lowther (Xavier), did pitch well. He tie his season high with 9 strikeouts, and pitched 5 and 1/3 innings giving up only 1 earned run. However, his defense committed five errors in total, and Lowther surrendered a total of four runs, highlighted by a two run homer by Kevin Smith (Maryland) in the 3rd to make it 3-0. The Whitecaps got a run in the 4th when Bryce Jordan (LSU) scored on a double by Brent Rooker (Mississippi State) to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Brewster ran into more trouble in the 6th. Lowther left and Eric Martinez (Cal Berkely) relieved him. YD plated two runs on a single by Matt Winaker (Stanford) and led 5-1 after 6. Brewster was not yet done though. Kel Johnson (Georgia Tech) singled in a run and Beau Jordan (LSU) grounded out to plate another to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the 7th. One inning later, Brewster had a chance to tie the game. Kel Johnson came up with the bases loaded and two outs and he singled in two runs to tie the game 5-5. Sadly in the bottom of the inning, as they have a couple times this summer, Brewster surrendered a lead just after fighting to tie the game. YD exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th, chasing Jacob Wloczewski (Binghamton) without him recording an out. Doubles by Winaker and Brendan Skidmore (Binghamton) put the game out of reach and Brewster ended its point streak with a 9-5 loss. Brewster fell to 11-15-1, and stays in a points tie with Chatham for 4th place in the division, but holds a head to head advantage over the Anglers, and maintain their fourth place standing despite the loss. Brewster hosts the last place Cotuit Ketleers on Wednesday at 5 PM at Stony Brook Field. Comments are closed.
