ORLEANS, Mass- Matt Davis slashed a leadoff home run for Brewster and Sean Guenther tossed 4.1 innings of one-run ball as the Orleans Firebirds defeated the Whitecaps 7-2 on Friday night at Eldridge Park. Davis tallied two extra-base hits for the Whitecaps, with his homer in the first inning and doubled in the third inning. The Caps wasted no time to start the game, as Matt Davis sent his league-leading seventh home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Caps up 1-0. Orleans tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the third inning on a sac-fly by Scott Hurst. The Caps put pressure on Guenther in the third as Ryan Gridley singled and Davis doubled down the left field line. The situation in the third was not uncommon as the Caps struggled to plate runners all night, leaving eight men on base throughout the contest. The Firebirds tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth to jump out to a 3-1 lead as Drew Lugbauer drove in two runs with an RBI double. Brewster loaded the bases in the top half of the seventh after Julian Infante and Ryan Gridley worked back-to-back walks and Davis was hit by a pitch, yet they were unable to capitalize as Nick Dunn grounded into a double play to end the frame. Erik Martinez allowed back-to-back singles to Riley Mahan and Adam Haseley, and walked Keegan McGovern to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Ethan Paul slapped a two-run single up the middle to give Orleans a 5-1 lead. Orleans would add two more runs in the eighth, to make it a 7-1 game. Ryan Gridley drove in a run with an RBI single in the ninth, yet the Firebirds held on to secure the 7-2 victory. Brewster drops to 9-9 with the loss. The Whitecaps return to action as we host the Bourne Braves on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Comments are closed.
