ORLEANS, M.A. - Unfortunately, the Whitecaps will not get to be winners of six in a row. Instead, they will start a new chapter, which is a race to the playoff.
The Whitecaps lost 8-6 and going into an off day, nobody wants to lose, but the Whitecaps showed tons of heart in a game they once trailed 5-0. This team has been showing fight and grit all season long. It is going to be a fun rest of the summer.
It was all Firebirds early. The Firebirds went up 5-0, and the Whitecaps were showing no signs of life.
That was until the seventh inning.
The Whitecaps scratched across two runs in the top of the seventh. The first run came off a Nick Biddison (Virginia Tech) Triple, and Biddison then scored off Alex Freeland's (UCF) double.
After that inning, you could start to feel the Whitecaps had something going in which they did.
With the bases loaded in the top of eighth trailing 5-2, the struggling Will Simpson (Washington) stepped up to pinch-hit. Simpson hit a ball that landed on the moon. The grand slam gave the Whitecaps the 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Firebirds scored three runs to gain back the lead.
The Whitecaps then had one more shot in the top of ninth down 8-6, the Whitecaps were unable to come back again.
The game didn't end there as the Firebirds pitcher made a few gestures to the Whitecaps dugout after striking out the last batter. Nothing else had happened, but from a fan's perspective, you could tell the Whitecaps were fired up.
You can see from that singular moment the Whitecaps will be locked in for the rest of the season. This is a team that won't let others push them around.
The Whitecaps now (15-8-2) will be home against Chatham this Friday at 5 p.m.
