HARWICH, MA- The Whitecaps entered Independence Day weekend with the hottest offense in the Cape League. Orleans and Bourne held Brewster to three runs total on Friday and Saturday and Brewster fell under .500 on Sunday for the first time since being 3-4 early in June. The Caps looked to end their skid and get back to .500 on Sunday, but ran into more offensive problems at Whitehouse Field in Harwich.
The first inning went well for Brewster, with Matt Davis (VCU) hitting another double and scoring on Colby Fitch's (Louisville) single. Unfortunately, Brewster did not score again. Brewster outhit Harwich for the whole game 7-5, and didn't commit a single error while the Mariners committed two. However, Brewster repeatedly got runners into scoring position and failed to drive them in. In total, nine Whitecaps were left on base in the game. That one run in the first inning did look like it could hold though. Kade McClure (Louisville) had his best start of the summer, throwing seven strong innings, striking out nine Mariners, and giving up no runs for the first six innings. Once the 7th inning arrived, Harwich broke through and got on the board. Joe Dunnand (North Carolina State) singled to open the inning and Johnny Adams (Boston College) hit a two run homer to left field to give Harwich their only two runs of the game. Brewster got the tying runner to scoring position in both the 8th and 9th inning, but the runners were stranded both times. Colby Fitch got to 3rd with two out in the 8th, but Ryan Noda (Cincinnati) struck out to end the inning. Zach Gahagan (North Carolina) led off the 9th with his 2nd single of the game, and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Jordan (LSU). Gahagan did not advance beyond 2nd, as Logan Warmoth (North Carolina) struck out and AJ Graffinino (Washington) grounded out to end the game. With the 2-1 victory, Harwich extended their lead in the Eastern Division and the Whitecaps dropped into last place in the division. These teams will rematch tomorrow, on Independence Day, at Stony Brook Field. First pitch will be at 5 PM. Comments are closed.
