Adam Haseley collected three hits, sparking the Orleans Firebirds to a 5-4 victory over the Brewster Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon at Eldredge Park. The Firebirds secured a playoff berth with the victory.
Walter Borkovich had the start for Brewster, allowing two runs on six hits over four full innings while striking out four. Borkovich was outdueled by Jason Morgan, and Will Stokes, who combined to keep the Whitecaps to four runs on the evening.
Morgan earned the victory as Orleans held on to a 5-4 lead and Borkovich surrendered his second loss of the season.
The Firebirds struck first in the bottom of the first as Brian Miller slapped a lead off single and Riley Adams brought him around to give the Firebirds the 1-0 lead.
The Caps battled back in the second, as Ryan Noda drove in Kel Johnson with an RBI double that struck the base of the wall in right field to make the score 1-1.
Orleans took the lead once again in the bottom of the second, as Garrett Benge ripped a liner into right field to drive in Keegan McGovern.
Max Herrmann ran into trouble in relief of Borkovich as Zach Kirtley slapped a single to center and Hasley reached on a bunt. Kirtley would score on an error and Payton Squire sent an RBI single to left field to add two more runs as the Firebirds jumped out to a 5-1 lead.
Brewster fought back in the top of the sixth, and Bryce Jordan was hit by a pitch, and Nick Dunn brought him around with an RBI double. Zach Gahagan added another run with an RBI single to left center to cut Orleans’ lead to 5-3. Brent Rooker drove in Gahagan with an RBI double to the fence to make it 5-4.
The Caps were unable to muster any further offense as Brandon Bielak entered the game to open the ninth and made quick work of the Whitecaps to record his fifth save of the season.
Brewster drops to 16-23-2 and will host the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
