BREWSTER (Stony Brook Field)- Brewster came out the victor in their 22nd and final home game at Stony Brook Field this summer. Eliminated from playoff contention yesterday, the Whitecaps went up against the Harwich Mariners with nothing on the line, playing solely for the home crowd that has supported them all season long.

“We came out and played with some pride and tried to win the last game here at home,” said Brewster shortstop Niko Gallego (UCLA), “And it’s good we could do that for the fans.”

Gallego was one of the contributors in the 2nd inning when Brewster was able to get three runs across, all with two outs. After a Zach Jones (Stanford) RBI triple to right center, Niko Gallego lined a single to right to bring home Jones. Gallego stole second and scored on a John Barr (Virginia) grounder through the left side.

In the following inning, Whitecaps fans were entertained with one of the longest home runs at Stony Brook Field this summer. To lead off the inning, Brewster cleanup hitter Tant Shepherd (Texas) unloaded on a Mike Gipson fastball and deposited it far into the trees in left.

The Caps didn’t stop there, putting up two more in the 4th. John Barr brought Gallego across for the second time in the game on an infield single. Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia) then smoked a fastball to left center, scoring Jarrett Parker (Virginia), who had reached on a single up the middle.

Whitecaps starter Steven Maxwell (Texas Christian) took good care of the early Brewster lead. Through seven innings of work, he allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking two and fanning five.

“My arm let me go a little further today so I was happy about that,” said Maxwell, “ I was able to work on that third pitch today, so I was pretty excited about getting that in there.”

Maxwell’s solid effort was relieved by Danny Sandbrink (Stanford) in the 8th and Tyler Thornburg (Charleston Southern) in the 9th, neither of whom allowed a run.

Gallego came around to score in the 8th on a wild pitch, making it his third run of the night and extending the Whitecaps lead to 7-2.

“It’s a different atmosphere right now,” said Gallego in regards to the lessened circumstances of tonight’s contest, “People are loose and we’re just trying to have a good time.”

Finishing the year with a 9-9-4 record at Stony Brook Field, Brewster will head to Cotuit tomorrow to wrap up the season.

“It took some pressure off of us,” said Brewster outfielder John Barr about playing out of playoff contention, “We had that mentality to go out there and play baseball like when you’re a kid- play for the love of the game, and I think we did that tonight. And hopefully we can end the season with two good wins against two good teams.”
